Advancing better care standards for individuals with IDD and providing support to affected parents and guardians

TAMMY'S STORY
Tammy Lynn was a person with Intellectually and Developmental Disabilities who tragically died at the age of 49 as a result of the lack of advocacy often experienced by persons with IDD. The chain of events which led to her death began with an incident of inadequate care at the group home where Tammy resided. One day, at her day program, Tammy was supposed to join her peers for an outing. She was kept back due to persistent coughing, and the staff were to pick her up and take her to the doctor. However, when they returned later that afternoon, Tammy was still at the day program. She rode the van home as usual but didn't return to the program for many days. Calls to her home went unanswered until the house staff finally informed that she had been in the hospital for five days.
Staff members immediately went to visit Tammy and found her asleep and intubated. Tammy was diagnosed with pneumonia. Before being hospitalized, the group home staff had not taken her to the doctor, instead giving her Robitussin, believing she only had a cold. Tammy's condition worsened with fluid on her lungs. Despite having a DNR in place, she was placed in hospice. All tubes were removed, and she passed away the next day.
This heartbreaking incident underscores the critical need for improved care standards and vigilant advocacy for individuals with IDD. Let’s honor Tammy’s memory by striving for change.
