Become a member of the barter network

A Barter Network for Parents and Guardians of Persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) in New York and the Mid-Atlantic.

Become a Member. It's Free.

This barter network created and managed by parents and guardians of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). These families face significant challenges in providing basic recreational, nutritional, health, economic, hygienic, and educational support for their loved ones. The barter network aims to alleviate some of these challenges by enabling the exchange of resources and services within the community, fostering cooperation, solidarity, and mutual aid. This initiative is part of a broader movement under the guidance of the Tammy Lynn Foundation, which is dedicated to empowering families and communities through collective action and shared support.

Let’s Work Together

 Activities of the barter network:

  1. Mapping Community Resources:

    • A comprehensive survey will be conducted among parents and guardians to identify available resources, skills, and services within the community. This can include items such as surplus food, clothing, hygiene products, educational materials, as well as skills like caregiving, transportation, and meal preparation.

    • A digital and physical directory of these resources will be created and maintained, allowing participants to easily identify available exchanges.

  2. Barter Exchanges:

    • Families will be able to exchange goods and services through both online platforms and regular in-person barter fairs. These fairs will provide opportunities for parents and guardians to meet, strengthen relationships, and directly exchange needed items.

    • Special emphasis will be placed on creating safe, accessible, and inclusive environments during these exchanges, ensuring that all participants feel welcomed and supported.

  3. Educational and Recreational Support:

    • The barter network will include a focus on educational support by organizing the exchange of learning materials, homeschooling resources, and tutoring services for individuals with IDD.

    • Recreational exchanges, such as shared access to sensory toys, art supplies, or community outings, will also be facilitated. Parents can swap experiences, tips, and even organize small group recreational events, such as music therapy sessions or sports activities, at no cost.

  4. Health and Nutritional Support:

    • The barter network will enable the exchange of nutritional resources such as surplus food, specialized dietary items, and home-cooked meals tailored to the needs of individuals with IDD.

    • Families with knowledge of alternative therapies, health and wellness practices, and self-care techniques can share their expertise, creating a pool of valuable health resources for everyone involved.

  5. Economic and Hygienic Support:

    • Parents and guardians will have the opportunity to exchange economic services such as childcare, assistance with government paperwork, or help with managing expenses and budgets.

    • Hygienic supplies, including diapers, personal care items, and cleaning products, will be shared, ensuring that every family has access to the basic items they need.
